ReDiscover Bicycle

A very warm welcome to this blog which is everything about cycling, bicycles, activities related to cycling around the world, and everyone is invited to contribute to this blog. This is an initiative by the Transportation and Automobile Design and Product Design students of NID (National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, India) as part of their final year Systems Design course under the guidance of Praveen Nahar, Activity Chairperson, NID.

ReDiscover Bicycle is an initiative to promote cycling culture in Ahmedabad city as a sustainable mode of transportation. Cycling culture has never been a part of Indian society ever since the advent of motorised transportation in India. And the trend is further falling. Ahmedabad has just got its first trial phase of BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) and the newly constructed cycle tracks along the BRTS corridor is the first step towards introducing dedicated infrastructure for promoting cycling in the city.

Now to start with this project, we are looking at setting up an experimental model of "Bike sharing" system in NID campus for the NID community. This system will have bicycles (of the volunteers and some of them would be repaired from the unclaimed cycles lying parked in staff parking area of NID, Paldi campus) available for sharing for 10 days. We the 'ReDiscover Bicycle' Team are making arrangements to get this system in place as soon as possible.
Yesterday, the cycles around the hostel area of the campus were tagged for request to the owners to contribute their bicycles for sharing. We look forward to some contirbutions. In the same regard, we are conducting a Focus Group Discussion today in the Product Design Studio, where in people from various domains have been invited for sharing their cycling experiences in their home towns/cities and in Ahmedabad. We have few students on exchange programme from RMIT, Melbourne and a faculty from Fachhochschule, Hannover Germany participating in the discussion.
